Back to School
I hope you all had an enjoyable break and first few weeks back! I’m so thrilled to be back in F3 with your amazing kiddos! Here is a little preview of what F3 is working on in January!
What We’re Working On
Science- We’ve been exploring many different engineering challenges so far in 2020! The first week back we created Humdingers, where the students created a device that both hums and dings with no instructions, just materials! Last week, students tried their hand at the Lego Catapult Challenge, where they built a device that allowed them to clean up legos without the student moving (how practical!). This week we’re starting to build our own Go-Carts that move with force!
Language Arts- In 2020, we started reading and discussing Expository Nonfiction. Basically, this means we’ve been reading a variety of articles that use different techniques to tell our readers information about a topic (pros & cons, opinion). Students have been analyzing these articles and discussing their own opinions on the topic. This week we’re taking a break from Expository Nonfiction to analyze and discuss what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for. We’ll be focusing on what MLK saw as the three evils- war, poverty, and racism. Feel free to ask your child what they’ve learned about MLK this week!
Other News- We just changed up seating arrangement for the new year.
Reminders
Homework- Students are always expected to be reading for 30 minutes every night. In addition to this, students will typically have a math assignment each night. Occasionally, we ask students to write special instructions on these math assignments like “Only spend 20 minutes on this.” We do this so students don’t get frustrated with the content outside of class. If they don’t understand the concepts, we want to work with them on that in class. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about homework.
Important Dates
Mid-Winter Break-
February 17th-February 21st (No School)
Class Birthdays

January 18th- Jazmine
January 27th- Jim
January 30th- Jaheim
About Me
As many of you know I, Mr. L, am a Resident Teacher with the University of Washington’s Seattle Teacher Residency program. I’m lucky enough to be in F3 the whole year. Most weeks I’m in the classroom Monday through Thursday, where I typically teach one or two classes a day. Once a semester, I have the chance to lead teach for a full week, with the incredible guidance of Ms. V. I have so enjoyed getting the chance to work with your kiddos this year, and can’t wait to continue to teach and learn from them as the year progresses.
Outside of school, I love playing music and basketball, and spending time with family and friends. Over the break, I was able to spend time with my parents in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as well as my wife’s family in Portland, Oregon. Over Mid-Winter Break, I’ll be in Jersey City, right outside of NYC, to spend time with my brother and his family (including a 6 month old nephew named Jack). As you can tell, family time is very important to me!
...until next time!
Once again, please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, thoughts, jokes, stories, etc…
Sincerely,
Mr. L
